Professor Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, who has been undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital after a knife attack, has been brought to Combined Military Hospital in the city.

An air ambulance carrying him left Osmani International Airport around 10:00pm.

Earlier, Osmani Medical College Hospital deputy director Debapada Roy said that Zafar Iqbal was being sent to Dhaka for better treatment.

A physician told Prothom Alo that it was too early to comment on Zafar Iqbal's condition as he received head injuries.

According to SUST treasurer Ilias Uddin, Zafar Iqbal was rushed to the MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital immediately after he came under a knife attack.

Renowned writer and educationist Zafar Iqbal sustained head injuries as a young man stabbed him with a knife during a prize-giving event of the university, said assistant proctor Jahid Hasan.

The event was part of an 'EEE Festival' organised by the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department at the Mukta Mancha on the campus.

Witness students said Zafar Iqbal was enjoying the programme on the stage and all of a sudden a young man swooped on him and stabbed him.

Immediately after the attack, the students caught the attacker and gave him a mass beating. The attacker has been kept inside the Shikkha Bhaban.

Jalalabad police station officer-in-charge Shafiqul Islam said law enforcers nabbed the attacker immediately after the attack but he is not responding to any questions.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Jyotirmoy Sarker said several policemen were injured when they tried to rescue Zafar Iqbal from the knife attack.

A constable, Ibrahim, was also injured while trying to catch the attacker.
