A Rajshahi tribunal on Tuesday sentenced two people to death and three others to life term imprisonment for killing Rajshahi University teacher professor Rezaul Karim Siddiquee in 2016.

After examining records and witnesses, Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Shirin Kabita Akhter handed down the verdict in presence of the three convicts on the dock, reports UNB.

The condemned convicts are Shariful Islam, a student of RU English department and Maskawat Hossain Sakib alias Abdullah, from Bogura. Shariful tried in absentia.

The lifers are Rahmatullah, a student of Rajshahi University, Abdus Sattar and his son Ripon Ali of Poba upazila.

According to the prosecution, on 8 November 2016, police pressed charges against eight members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in the case more than six months after the killing.

Of them, Badal, Nazrul and Osman were killed in gunfights with police at different times and Shariful has been on the run.

Professor Rezaul Karim, 58, of RU english department, was killed by miscreants in the city’s Shalbagan area while he was waiting for university bus on 23 April 2011.

The victim’s son Sourov Hossain filed a murder case with Boalia police station.
