Bus runs over students waiting beside city road, 2 dead

At least two students were crushed to death and 13 more injured when a speedy bus ran over them at Airport Road in Kurmitola area on Sunday noon.

One more injured student was being treated in critical conditions at a local hospital.

The deceased, Abdul Karim and Dia Khanom Mim, were class XII and XI students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College, Kurmitola General Hospital’s assistant director Sogir Mia confirmed Prothom Alo.

The police and witnesses said, an Uttara-bound bus of ‘Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan’ lost control and ran over the students standing beside the road around 12:00am, killing the duo on the spot.

Only one witness said the students of nearby Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School were crossing the road near Radisson Blue hotel. As the students standing beside the road tried to board a bus ‘Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan’, another bus of the same company ran over the students.

As repercussion to the incident, the students of the college took to the street and vandalised several vehicles.

Officer-in-charge of Cantonment police station Kazi Shahan Hoque confirmed the incident.

He said the blockade by the students created huge traffic jam in the road.

He, however, said the police cleared the road around 3:30pm although the students were coming back to tbe street.

Road accidents, especially due to reckless driving, claimed many lives at different parts of the country including Dhaka city in recent months.
