Customs preventive team arrested a citizen of India along with 22 gold bars, weighing 12.30 kg, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early Thursday.

The arrestee is Arshad Ayaz, 46, from Kolkata in Bengal of India, reports UNB.

Airport Customs House (preventive) deputy commissioner Othello Chowdhury said Arshad came to Dhaka from Bangkok by a flight of Thai Airways at night.

Tipped off, the team challenged Arshad while he was crossing the green channel of the airport around 1:00am, he said.

The customs officials recovered 22 gold bars worth Tk 615 million wrapped around his waist with white scotch tape, Othello said.

Later, he was handed over to police, the customs official added.
