Shimulia-Kanthalbari ferry services suspended

Ferry services on Shimulia-Kanthalbari route in the Padma river under Lauhajang upazila were suspended early Monday due to poor navigability, reports UNB.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) suspended the ferry services around 12:00am as it became difficult to operate ferries on the route, said its assistant general manager Khandaker Shah Khaled Newaz.

He said the channel has now only five feet water whereas it needs seven-eight feet for ferry operation.

However, dredging work is underway in the river to restore its navigability.

Earlier on Sunday, the BIWTA authorities advised heavy vehicles to avoid the route.
