For more than 250 years prisoners in the country were taking only two slices of bread and a little bit gur (sweetmeat) as breakfast but the menu changes from today (Sunday).

Instead of the menu fixed by the colonial British government, the prisoners will now get khichuri, halua and bread, and bread and vegetables.

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was scheduled to inaugurate the new menu.

Prison sources said the prime minister directed to change the menu when it was discussed in the latest conference of the deputy commissioners.

The inmates in 68 prisons across the country used to get two breads of 102.60 grams and 14.28 grams gur until now.

From now on they will get bread and vegetables on four days, khichuri on two days and halua and bread on the other day of the week, Dhaka jail super Mohammad Mahbubul Islam told Prothom Alo on Saturday.
