Man commits suicide after ‘rape attempt’ on him

A man committed suicide after a group of young people made a rape attempt on him and recorded the incident on their mobile phones at Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Monday morning, according to police and the victim’s family members.

The offenders demanded Tk 200,000 from the victim, Jamal Uddin, 45, a few days ago.

As he did not meet their demand, they took him to a jungle on Sunday. Family members alleged they tried to rape him there instigating him to commit suicide out of humiliation on the following morning.

The family members accused certain Pintu, Shawon, Sadeq, Sajal and Rony of the incident.

They snatched Jamal’s mobile phone and money before the attempted rape and recorded the incident on their cell phones, the victim’s family members said.

The offenders also threatened Jamal that they would upload the video of the incident on the social media if he failed to meet their demand.
They, however, released Jamal as he assured them of providing the money soon, the family members said adding upon his return home, Jamal apprised his family of the matter.

Being frustrated and out of humiliation, Jamal finally committed suicide, the family members claimed.

According to the family, Jamal Uddin worked abroad for long and returning home he started farming.

Local people said Jamal and his wife recently had a quarrel. Following the incident, his wife left home with their only child, they added.

The neighbours found the hanging body of Jamal with the ceiling of the veranda of his house. They informed police about the matter.

Sreepur police station sub inspector Noyon Bhuiyan said they recovered the body and sent it for autopsy to Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, Gazipur.

Officier-in-charge Liakot Ali said a suspect in connection with the incident has been detained and sent to the court on Tuesday. Efforts are on to nab the rest, he added.

Meanwhile, the victim’s son filed a case with Sreepur police station against five people for instigating the suicide.
