Woman killed as 'reckless' bus falls into ditch

A woman was killed and 16 others were injured when a bus plunged into a ditch in Thakurgaon early Monday.

The identity of the deceased could not be known yet.

According to the bus passengers, highway police and witnesses, the accident took place around 4:00am when a Panchagarh-bound bus of Hanif Enterprise fell off from a bridge and plunged into a roadside ditch after hitting an electric pole at Hajirmore on Thakurgaon-Dinajpur highway.

The passengers of the bus alleged that the driver who fled away after the accident was driving the bus recklessly.

Shariful Islam who was in the bus said that they repeatedly requested the driver to limit speed of the bus as he was driving it recklessly after crossing the Bangabandhu Bridge. But, he did not pay any heed to them, he added.

The injured are now undergoing treatment at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, said its on-duty physician Bhabotash Ray.
