Fakhrul, Abbas not to get bail for now

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the party’s standing committee member Mirza Abbas won’t get bail for now as the chamber court has fixed 8 January for hearing the petition of the state seeking a stay of Fakhrul and Abbas' bail granted by the High Court.

Two leaders have been instructed not to submit their bail order to the court concerned till the period (8 January).

On Tuesday, the High Court granted bail to Fakhrul and Abbas in a case filed in connection with a clash between police and BNP leaders and activists in front of the party’s head office in Naya Paltan, Dhaka on 7 December.

On Wednesday, the state filed a petition to the Appellate Division for a stay order on the bail.

A hearing on the appeal was held at the chamber court the same day.

Attorney general AM Amin Uddin represented the state at the hearing while advocate Zainul Abedin stood for the BNP leaders.

After the hearing, the chamber court sent the state’s appeal for a hearing to an Appellate Division bench, which will be held on 8 January, meaning Fakhrul and Abbas will have to remain behind bars for now.

Chamber judge Jahangir Hossain passed the order.

Earlier on Monday, Fakhrul and Abbas appealed for bail at the High Court after three bail pleas at the chief metropolitan magistrate court, Dhaka and one appeal at the metropolitan session judge court, Dhaka were rejected.

On 8 December, the detective branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police raided the homes of Fakhrul and Abbas. Both were arrested and taken to the capital’s DB head office at Minto Road.

On 9 December, DB announced that the BNP leaders were arrested on charges of planning and inciting attacks on the police.

On 7 December, one person died and 50 people suffered injuries during a clash between police and BNP leaders and activists at the Naya Paltan area of Dhaka.

After the clash, the police raided the BNP central office and arrested 300 leaders and activists, and filed one case each at the Paltan, Motijheel and Shahjahanpur police station and two cases at the Ramna police station.
