Convener of Gono Odhikar Parishad, Nurul Haque, has alleged that the leaders and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad came under attack of ruling Awami League and its associate bodies in different parts of the country while placing wreaths at different places to mark Victory Day on 16 December.

Ex-DUCSU vice president Nurul Haque’s Gono Odhikar Parishad held a rally at central Shahid Minar on Friday protesting the attacks of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League, the youth wing of Awami League.

Nurul Haque presided over the rally. President of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad Bin Yemin Molla, general secretary of Jubo Odhikar Parishad Maidul Hasan, Shromik Odhikar Parishad general secretary Shohel, and joint convener of Gono Odhikar Parishad Rashed Khan along with other leaders and activists were present in the rally.

Nurul Haque said Bangladesh Chhatra League have already crossed the limits of even the occupying Pakistani forces in torturing people and other political parties.

Warning the government, Nurul Haque said, “We’ve waited for long, endured for long; if the attacks against us continue this way, we’ll resist with whatever we have for self-defence.”

“In Shariatpur Chhatra League, Jubo League and Swechhasebok League leaders and activists attacked our leaders and activists under the leadership of local MP, Iqbal Hossain on 16 December. Some of our men were injured in the attack. At the order of Jamalpur district Awami League general secretary Faruq Chowdhury, Chhatra League and Jubo League leaders and activists attacked our leaders and activists on that day. The same happened in Langadu upazila, Rangamati when upazila Awami League general secretary Bablu Das ordered to attack us. Chhatra League and Jubo League men attacked our leaders and activists in Tangail, Pabna Kurigram and a few other districts when our leaders and activists went to place wreaths marking the Victory Day,” he added.

He demanded arrest and speedy trial of those who attacked the leaders and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad. “We want to say it clearly to the government that we’ve waited for long, endured for long. If the perpetrators are not punished and if the attacks against us continue this way, we’ll prevent that with whatever we have for self-defence.”

Terming the government “a fascist government formed without any vote” Nurul Haque said the government has crossed the limit of barbarity of occupying Pakistan rulers.

Indicating the US sanctions against RAB and its seven former and current officials, he also said the image of the law enforcement agency is in crisis because of this government. “They have been trying to kill the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in a planned manner. This government cannot endure any opposition and dissent. They attack like vicious beasts wherever they are finding any dissent.”

Slamming the government, the Gono Odhikar Parishad convener further said, “Despite claiming them as the flag bearers of the spirit of Liberation War they no longer are bearing the spirit of Liberation War. Awami League has snatched the voting rights of people, destroyed human rights. They have dishonoured the country as a result no country in the world is considering Bangladesh a democratic nation any longer.”
