Sir Fazle Hasan AbedBRAC

Today, Monday, 27 April, marks the 84th anniversary of birth of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, visionary, eminent development personality and founder of BRAC

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed was born on 27 April in 1936 in the village Baniachang of Habiganj district. He founded BRAC in 1972 in an effort to help refugees rebuild their lives. These were the refugees returning from India to their villages devastated during the Liberation War. Under Sir Fazle's leadership, BRAC has grown to be one of the largest development organisations of the world. Over hundred thousand of its staff are engaged in helping 130 million people of 11 countries, including Bangladesh, improve their life and livelihood.

Sir Fazle passed away on 20 December last year, while undergoing treatment in a hospital in the Dhaka city.

No special programmes are being organised to celebrate Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s birthday this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. BRAC will pay tribute to its founder through its ongoing emergency food assistance programme and mass awareness campaign across Bangladesh. The drives have engaged more than 100 thousand staff, volunteers and health workers.
