Fuel train derailed in Habiganj, BGB deployed to stop looting
A fuel-laden train derailed in Madhabpur area of Habiganj. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 pm on Wednesday, when five wagons of the train derailed.
As a result, rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country has remained suspended. Rescue operations were still ongoing as of 9:00 am on Thursday.
Following the derailment, large numbers of local residents gathered at the site, and some attempted to loot fuel from the overturned wagons.
Upon receiving the information, members of the BGB and other law enforcement agencies promptly arrived and brought the situation under control.
According to railway sources, the fuel-laden train was travelling from Chattogram to Sylhet.
At around 9:30 pm, while passing Montola Railway Station in Madhabpur, six of its wagons derailed, one of which fell into a roadside ditch. This incident caused the suspension of rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country.
At around 9:00 am on Thursday, Liton Chandra Dey, station master of Shayestaganj Railway Station, stated that rescue operations were ongoing.
He confirmed that two wagons had been recovered by that time and that rail communication with Sylhet remained disrupted.
Lieutenant Colonel Tanzilur Rahman, commanding officer of BGB Habiganj Battalion 55 told Prothom Alo, “We reached the scene immediately after receiving the information and stopped the looting of fuel. We have recovered approximately 1,000 litres of fuel from the site. Along with the fire service, we are continuing the rescue operations.”
