‘FTA would boost trade with Malaysia’

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) laid emphasis on signing free trade agreement (FTA) with Malaysia to boost bilateral trade and investment, reports UNB.

The High Commissioner of Malaysia in Bangladesh Nur Ashikin Binti Mohd Taib on Tuesday made a courtesy call on Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) president Abul Kasem Khan, according to a press release.

She said that Bangladesh has a promising future in terms of trade, commerce and economic development. Regarding infrastructure development, Bangladesh has done well in the recent past, she said.

She said the existing trade balance between Bangladesh and Malaysia is in favour of Malaysia. Recently in the World Bank ease of doing business report Malaysia jumped to 15th position from 20, she informed.

Stability in the last decade helped Bangladesh keep its GDP growth ahead, she added. She also said ASEAN market is one of the largest potential markets in the world and Bangladesh can take its advantages by investing in this region.
DCCI president Abul Kasem Khan said Bangladesh is the gateway to South and Southeast Asian region. He said that DCCI always advocates for Bangladesh's inclusion in the ASEAN as a member country.
He said that with the help of Malaysia's expertise and knowledge sharing, DCCI would like to work as a halal certification agency especially in this field. As Bangladesh is a market of 160 million people and most of them are Muslims so halal certification could be a promising sector to be explored.
He invited Malaysian investors to invest in Bangladesh in infrastructure, power & energy, tourism, leather sector.
DCCI vice president Riyadh Hossain, directors Waqar Ahmad Choudhury, Hossain A Sikder, Andaleeb Hasan, Md. Al Amin, S M Zillur Rahman and Humayun Rashid were present during the meeting.
