The village of Chougram in Singra upazila of Natore is known for the rows of palm trees. The whole village is surrounded by palm trees and the villagers also live on palmyra fruit’s kernel. The handmade fans from palmyra leaves help the villagers during summer.

The village of Chougram also has a history of kings. The 300-year old royal palace of king Rashik Roy is situated in this village. Rashik Roy’s son Krishnakanto planted all the palmyra trees.  

The palmyra trees planted all around the village still draw the attention of people.

A number of villagers earn their livelihood by selling palmyra fruit’s kernel. The people of Chougram invite their relatives from other places and treat them with various cakes made of palmyra fruit.

Chougram union parishad chairman Zahedul Islam said palmyra trees protect the village houses from thundering and also help to maintain the natural eco system.

Upazila agricultural officer Sajjad Hossain said palmyra trees have been planted covering 12 kilometres of areas in 12 unions of Singra upazila and a target has been set to plant palmyra trees along one road in each union.
