Khulna residents demand no park structure on Mayur River

City dwellers in Khulna on Thursday protested the Khulna City Corporation’s (KCC’s) move to set up a park on the Mayur River.
The KCC is erecting structures for Liliya Park Project in the river violating a High Court order and directives of the River Protection Commission, they alleged at a human chain programme, reports UNB news agency.
The Mayur River runs through the metropolitan area of Khulna, which receives most of the sewage from the city.
Jana Udyog, a social organisation in Khulna, organised the human chain on Gollamari Bridge in the city protesting the KCC’s move to ‘occupy’ the Mayur River in the name of implementation of a development project.
The speakers said the city corporation is setting up structures in the Mayur under Liliya Park Project ignoring our request not to implement any so-called development project in the river.
Observing that many musclemen are grabbing the river by setting up structures, they said the Mayur will get destroyed in the near future if the trend of the encroachment continues.
President of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Khulna Unit HM Shahadat Hossain, Jana Udyog secretary Mahendra Nath Sen, local journalist Devnath Ranjit Kumar and SM Fakh-ul-Islam of Bangladesh Workers Party, among others, spoke at the human chain programme.
