Capital drenched, streets muddy

Even as it rains, weathermen have forecast further heavy rainfall in most parts of the country over the next 48 hours.

Dhaka has experienced more than 100 millimetres of rain - 54mm since Tuesday morning, according to Dhaka Met office.

Streets in many parts of the capital city have gone under water, much to the inconvenience of the commuters. The city has also witnessed heightened traffic congestion amid the rain.

“This kind of rain is likely to occur in the next 1-2 days and it is monsoon,” Bazlur Rashid of the Met office told Prothom Alo.

The country’s highest rainfall of 110mm was recorded in Feni in 24 hours till 6:00am Tuesday.

Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, said the forecast valid until 6:00am Wednesday.

And “moderately heavy to very heavy raifall” may occur at places over the country during the period.

UNB reports: Commuters have been suffering as many thoroughfares of Dhaka city have gone under water due to heavy monsoon rains over Bangladesh.

Following the heavy rain that started last night, Dhaka saw huge water-logging, especially in Green Road, Tejturi Bazar, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and other low-lying areas.

Chattogram experienced 79.2mm rain in 24 hours in Tuesday morning, according to Chattogram Meteorological office.

Dwellers of the port city, too, suffered due to lack of motor vehicles and rickshaws, while many roads saw severe traffic congestion.
