Nat’l Committee for halting ‘anti-Sundarbans’ projects

National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas Natural Resources, Power and Port has demanded a stoppage of all activities including construction of Rampal power plant, which it considers potentially damaging for the Sundarbans, before the upcoming national election, reports UNB.

The committee also announced to observe worldwide 'Global Solidarity for Sundarbans' on 10 November to drum up its support for the demand.

These were announced at a press conference at Mukti Bhaban in the city on Saturday.

Addressing the press conference, National Committee member secretary professor Anu Mohammad urged all the political parties to include in their agenda the issues of stopping the Rampal and all other projects against the Sundarbans.

He said the committee will launch different campaign programmes in October-November across the country to get support of different political parties.

Other leaders of the National Committee including its convenor engineer Muhammad Shahidullah, Ruhin Hossain Prince, Tipu Biswas, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, and Nazrul Islam also spoke on the occasion.

Bringing allegation of unfair practice and irregularities in different mega projects including Rooppur nuclear power, leaders demanded publication of white-paper on the projects' activities.

They also demanded cancellation of the Speedy Power and Energy Supply (Special) Act 2010 before the national election.
