Indian, Bangladeshi artists' work displayed at AFD

Three local and five Indian artists are displaying their works at a group show which began Monday at Alliance Francaise de Dhaka's La Galerie in the capital.

The Bangladeshi artists are Nurun Nahar Papa, Elham Huq Khuku and Zebun Nahar Nayeem and their Indian counterparts are Biman Bihari Das, Joydeb Bala, Nishi Sharma, Simran Kawaljit Singh Lamba and Subrata Ghosh.

The exhibition, titled 'Symphony', features folk themes and traditions of Bangladesh and its neighbour India.

Notably, Biman Bihari Das, awarded India's highest civilian honour Padma Shri, exhibits his bronze and marble sculptures as well as acrylic paintings.

Nurun Nahar Papa's works can be termed a fusion of oriental style and modern design forms while Elham Huq Khuku follows the culture and social aspects of Bangladesh. Zebun Nahar Nayeem has applied motifs as symbols of society and her works are of realistic, surealistic and abstract.

Indian artist Subrata Ghosh's works look back towards the grand tradition of painting and sculpture of the classical era while Joydeb Bala’s most works are modern both in theme and in execution. And, Simran Kawaljit Singh Lamba’s mixed media works are done in dry pastels, molten wires and molten coal tar.

Nishi Sharma's works translates her transformative experiences of this living world directly into her subject in an abstract form.

According to an Alliance Francaise de Dhaka press release, the group art show inaugurated on Monday will continue till 7 September.

Professor Biman Bihari Das, chairman, All India Art and Craft Society (AIFACS) attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest while professor Nazrul Islam was special guest.
