Kusal Mendis hit his fourth Test century on his birthday as Sri Lanka further slashed the deficit with Bangladesh on the third day of the first Test.

The visitors now have 249 for 1, with Mendis not out on 103 and Dhananjaya de Silva unbeaten on 145.

The duo have made 249 in the second wicket after opener Dimuth Karunaratne had gone back to the pavillion without making a run the previous day.

Sri Lanka are still trailing Bangladesh by 264 runs, who had posted 513 batting first.
