The Dhaka University authorities on Friday decided to stop in-person classes due to the spike in novel coronavirus infections in the country.

The decision was taken following the government’s directives to shut down educational institutions to curb the spread of the virus infection.

However, classes and exams will continue online, said pro-vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, ASM Maksud Kamal to Prothom Alo.

He further said directives would be issued soon to this end.

Earlier in the day, the cabinet division issued emergency directives to curb the spread of novel coronavirus including the shutting down of educational institutions for the next two weeks.

The directives said all schools and colleges will remain shut from 21 January to 6 February.

The cabinet division further said the university authorities will take the same decision for them.

Following the directives, National University authorities postponed all exams until the next directive is issued. The time of the exams will be announced later after observing the infection situation.

Cabinet division directives said the universities have to be stopped until 6 February. The universities were asked to take the decisions as they run by their own acts.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Jahangirnagar University have already returned to online class stopping in-person classes.

Earlier, the government shut all educational institutions in the country from 17 March 2020. The institutions reopened on 12 September 2021, nearly after 18 months as the situation improved.
