Ex-president Abdur Rahman Biswas dies

Bangladesh's former president Abdur Rahman Biswas has died due to various old-age complications. He was 93.

He breathed his last at the United Hospital in the capital at 8:45pm on Friday.

Abdur Rahman Biswas was taken to the hospital after his condition had deteriorated on Friday.

Quoting Abdur Rahman's son Mahmud Hasan, the official of BNP chairperson's media wing, Shyrul Kabir Khan confirmed the death news to Prothom Alo.   

He was survived by five sons and two daughters, reports UNB. 

Abdur Rahman Biswas was the president of Bangladesh during the 1991-1996 tenure of BNP.

According to Bangapedia, Abdur Rahman Biswas was elected member of the East Pakistan Legislative Assembly in 1962 and again in 1965. He worked as parliamentary secretary of East Pakistan from 1965 to 1969.

He was elected MP in the general election held in 1979. He served as the jute minister (1979-80) with president Ziaur Rahman and as health minister (1981-82) with president justice Abdus Sattar.

He was elected MP in the 27 February election of 1991. He was then elected speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad on 4 April 1991.

After the reintroduction of the parliamentary system in the country, Abdur Rahman Biswas was elected president on 8 October 1991.
