Pradip Kumar Das, the officer-in-charge withdrawn from the Teknaf police station, is going to Cox’s Bazar to surrender at the court in the case regarding the killing of retired major Sinha Md Rashed Khan. He left the Chattogram divisional police hospital Thursday afternoon to go to the court.
Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Md Mahabubur Rahman, confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo.
Replying to a question as to why he was not arrested even after the case had been filed, Mahbubur Rahman said, “Pradip has set out for the court on his own accord. He has police escort so that he cannot flee.”
On Tuesday, OC Pradip took leave, claiming to be unwell, and left the police station. He later got admitted to the Chattogram police hospital.
OC Pradip’s home is in Chattogram and he was posted in Chattogram before Cox’s Bazar. He had been suspended on charges of land grabbing and other allegations while in Chattogram.
Retired army major Sinha Md Rashed Khan, 36, was shot dead by police on 31 July night at the Shamlapur police checkpost on the Teknaf Marine Drive in Cox’s Bazar.
Sinha’s elder sister Sharmin Shaharia Ferdous filed a case in this regard on Wednesday with the Cox’s Bazar senior judicial magistrate’s court.
Senior judicial magistrate Tamanna Farah took up the case and ordered the Teknaf police station OC to present an explanation within seven days. Also, the RAB-15 Cox’s Bazar camp commander has been instructed to investigate the case and inform the court accordingly.
The police headquarters has said Pradip Kumar Das joined the Teknaf model police station as OC in 2018.
He joined the police force in 1995 as a sub-inspector. In 2019 he was given the highest police award, Bangladesh Police Medal. He has also received the President’s Police Medal on several occasions.
