‘BCL attacks’ hurt 13 CU students

At least 13 students of Chittagong University were injured in attacks allegedly by ruling Bangladesh Awami League’s (AL) student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men on the campus on Wednesday.

The incident took place just a day after BCL activists’ attacked a group of demonstrating students on the Dhaka University campus, leaving at least 10 students injured. 

Witnesses said a group of students, including leaders and activists of left-leaning organisations, brought out a procession from the CU Central Student Union (CUCSU) protesting at the BCL attacks on the students of Dhaka University.

When the procession reached in front of IT Bhaban on the campus around 1:00pm, a group of BCL men numbering 30-40 obstructed the procession and swooped on the processionists.

Later, a chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups.

On information, a team of proctorial body rushed in and brought the situation under control.

Later, the BCL men again attacked the students when the leaders and activists of Pragatishil Chhatra Jote brought out another procession from Unmukto Mancha around 3:00pm. They beat the students.

Fazle Rabbi, convener of Chhatra Front's university unit, claimed that the BCL men equipped with sticks and sharp weapons attacked the students, leaving 15-20 injured.

The university proctor Niaz Morshed Ripon said the situation remained under control.
