Two more defamation suits were filed against acting editor of Dainik Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman in Sylhet and Khulna on Monday for his alleged derogatory remarks about independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh, and Bangabandhu and his family.

In Sylhet, Rahat Tarafdar, former president of Bangladesh Chhatra League of Sylhet city unit filed the Tk 5 billion file a defamation case with the chief metropolitan magistrate court in the afternoon, reports UNB.

Additional public prosecutor advocate Mahmudur Rahman said the court asked police to investigate the matter and submit a report within a week.

In Khulna, Nazia Ahmed Barna, Jubo Mahila League president of Khulna ward no.16 filed Tk 10 billion defamation suit with a court.

Judge Md Amirul Islam ordered Khulna sadar police station officer-in-charge to investigate in this regard.

According to the case statement, on 1 December, Mahmudur Rahman at a programme at the Jatiya Press Club alleged that Bangladesh is not an independent country as it has no sovereignty although it has land and population.

“Bangladesh is now a colony of India. According to the political science, Bangladesh can’t be considered as a state. Sheikh Mujib had killed country’s democracy and independence of mass media and buried it,” he had said, according to the statement.

He also alleged that the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman should not be in the premise of the Jatiya Press Club and claimed that incumbent government is an illegal one.

Earlier on Sunday, sedition complaints were lodged against him in Dinajpur and in Natore on 7 December.
