The work on country’s first waste treatment plant involving Tk 24.55 crore is progressing fast at Jhumjhumpur of Shohortoli area, aiming to produce biogas, power and compost fertiliser.

The Jessore municipality authorities took the initiative in 2015 to build a clean city through setting up the treatment plant on 13 acres of land with the financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Liton Hossain, deputy assistant engineer of Jessore municipality, said already 50 per cent work of the project has been completed.

The authorities concerned have set a target to process 45 tons of waste in the plant per day. At first the plant will produce biogas, compost fertiliser and power after processing 25-30 tons of wastes per day.
The produced biogas and fertiliser will be sold commercially while the power generated from the plant will be used in the project area.
Ninety container dustbins will be used for collecting wastes from nine wards of the municipality while wastes will be collected from Chougaccha, Abhoynagar and Jhikorgaccha upazilas of the district.
The construction work of the plant began on 14 October, 2015 with a target to end the construction work by December in this year. The project work will be started in January, next.
