The Editors' Council on Monday expressed deep concern over the attack on noted writer and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) professor Muhammed Zafar Iqbal.

In a statement issued on Monday, the council said that such an attack is an attempt to rob the country of talent. It went on to say that Muhammed Zafar Iqbal has been working to uphold the spirit of country’s liberation war and is a regular columnist for newspapers.

“His columns in the newspapers are very popular...This attack against Zafar Iqbal is in fact an attack against every concerned citizen of the country,” reads the statement.

Signed by its general secretary and The Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam, the statement urged government and the law enforcers to take necessary measures against such attempts.

It also hoped that security of every citizen of the country would be ensured.

On Saturday, a young man attacked Zafar Iqbal, a teacher of computer science and engineering department of the university, around 5:40pm. He had been seated in the dais of a programme, ‘Robo-5,’ of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department at Mukta Mancha.
