Zafar Iqbal knifed on SUST campus, 'attacker' held

Professor Muhammed Zafar Iqbal sustained head injuries as he was stabbed by an unknown assailant on the campus of Sylhet's Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

Zafar Iqbal, a faculty of SUST's Computer Science and Engineering Department, has been knifed at a prize-giving ceremony of the university, said assistant proctor Jahid Hasan.

The renowned writer and educationist, Zafar Iqbal, has been rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College for treatment.

A physician told Prothom Alo that it was too early to comment on Zafar Iqbal's condition as he received head injuries. He has been taken to the operation room of the hospital, the physician added.

Witnesses said some people started a brawl at one stage of the programme. During the chaos, the attacker swooped on Zafar Iqbal with a knife and stabbed him.

Jalalabad police station officer-in-charge Shafiqul Islam said the attacker, a young man, has been caught instantly after the attack. But, his identity could not be known immediately.
