Confusion over IGP's visit to Germany due to error in govt order: Police

The inspector general of police (IGP) was supposed to go to Germany to check the quality of the fabric used in bed sheets and pillowcases, not to purchase the items.

There is a requirement to check the quality before pre-shipment of the products. This was the reason for this tour. This confusion stemmed from an unintentional mistake in the government order.

Assistant inspector general (media and PR) of the police headquarters, Md Kamruzzaman, disclosed this information through a text message on Saturday.

The police headquarters says the government order (GO) issued in this regard was inadvertently incorrect. Reading the government order, it seems that the IGP was going to Germany to buy 100,000 bed sheets and pillowcases. But that is not the case. Bed sheets and pillowcases are not being imported from abroad. This kind of confusion has been created due to the wording of the order.

Kamruzzaman said the procurement was being done following the public procurement rule (PPR). In this case, there is an obligation that the buyers must visit the producing company and the factories producing the raw materials. The tour was organised as per this rule.

Seeking anonymity, a top official of police told Prothom Alo that the bed sheets would not be imported from Germany. Since good colours are not produced in Bangladesh, it was mentioned in the tender that the colours hould be of European standard. And to ensure that, the IGP was supposed to visit Germany just as the previous IGP.

The police headquarters has said that the IGP would not visit Germany unless the required correction is made in the government order. The headquarters will issue a letter in this regard to the home ministry Sunday.
