Covid-19: Bangladesh reports highest cases in 40 days, most deaths in 30 days

The number of detected novel coronavirus cases in Bangladesh, according to the government, on Tuesday rose to 815,282 as 2,322 more cases were reported, after testing 19,165 samples, including rapid antigen tests, in the last 24 hours.

During that time 44 Covid-19 patients died, raising the total deaths in the country to 12,913, said a press release of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) today.

The rate of detection in the last 24 hours until 8:00 am was 12.12 per cent, while the overall rate of detection of infected cases in Bangladesh as of Tuesday stands at 13.40 per cent.

Earlier, on 29 April, the health directorate reported 2,341 new cases in 24 hours while on 9 May it reported 56 deaths in the previous 24 hours.

The health directorate today said a total of 2,062 people were recovered from the highly infectious disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total recovery to 755,302.

The overall rate of people recovered as of today stands at 92.64 per cent while the rate of death is 1.58 per cent, it added.

Of the people died in the last 24 hours, 27 were male and 17 female. Of the total deaths so far, 9,302 were male (72.04 per cent) and 3,611 female (27.96 per cent).

Among the 44 patients died in the last 24 hours, 40 breathed their last at different hospitals while four at home.

Among the Covid-19 patients died in that time, 11 were in Dhaka division, seven in Chattogram, 11 in Rajshahi, six in Khulna, two in Sylhet, five in Rangpur and two in Mymensingh divisions.

Among the patients died in Bangladesh so far, 7,247 were in Dhaka, 2,475 in Chattogram, 738 in Rajshahi, 825 in Khulna, 389 in Barisal, 479 in Sylhet, 493 in Rangpur, and 267 in Mymensingh division, the DGHS said.

A total of 19,556 samples were collected in the last 24 hours. As of Tuesday, the number of samples tested in Bangladesh stands at 60,86,207.

Bangladesh detected first coronavirus patient on 8 March last year and recorded its first death in the disease on 18 March that year.
