Stamford University student Shipra granted bail

Stamford University student Shipra Debnath, who was arrested following the killing of retired major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan, was granted bail on Sunday.

Cox’s Bazar senior judicial magistrate passed the order in a case filed under the narcotics control act with Ramu police station.

Human and legal rights watchdog Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has been providing Shipra Debnath with legal aid.

"We had filed the case on behalf of Shipra around 12:30pm," said Arup Barua, a lawyer working for ASK. "We told the court that she was a victim of the incident as the police concocted a case to divert the killing of Sinha M Rashed," he said adding that the state prosecution had opposed the bail petition.

Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was killed during a police firing at Shamlapur, Cox’s Bazar on 31 July.

Police filed two cases with Teknaf police station and Ramu police stations in connection with the killing.

Police had detained Shipra Debnath, Shahedul Islam Sifat and Tahsin Ifat Nur, students of film and media studies at Stamord University in connection with the killing.

The three went to Cox's Bazar on 3 July to take part in a documentary being made by Sinha.

Later, Tahsin was released, and Shipra was shown arrested on 1 August. Police also sought a five-day-remand to quiz her. Shahedul Islam Sifat is still in prison.
