Two returning officers sued in Sylhet

Police on Thursday filed a case against the two returning officers after their arrest with sealed ballot papers from a centre at Zakiganj upazila in Sylhet during the fifth phase UP election, reports UNB.

Officer-in-charge of Zakiganj police station Abdul Hakim filed the case against returning officers- Ariful Haque, upazila agricultural officer and Sadman Sakib, upazila election officer- under the Local Government (union parishad) Act, said Lutfor Rahman, additional superintendent (media) of Sylhet police.

The accused were shown arrested in the case and produced before court on Thursday, he said.

On Wednesday, during the election at Barhal, Kajolsar and some other UPs in the upazila police arrested the two returning officers with sealed ballot papers in their vehicle in front of Moricha Government Primary School.

Later vote casting was suspended at Kajalsar union.

Some 1,200 sealed and 456 unsealed ballot papers, cash Tk 121,000 and some drugs were seized from Ariful Haque’s car during the arrest, said police.
