Dozen citizens recommend EC law
A dozen eminent citizens on Monday said that an election law should be enacted in line with constitutional obligation as permanent arrangement to appoint the election commissioners.
They made the recommendation during the talks with the search committee, appointed by the president for reconstituting the election commission, at the Supreme Court premises.
The eminent citizens insisted on the election commission law if even it requires some time. The current commission, headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, expires next month.
The search committee led by Appellate Division judge Syed Mahmud Hassan, also invited five more eminent citizens for consultation at the Supreme Court judges lounge on 1 February (Wednesday), the cabinet secretary told newsmen.
They are journalists Golam Sarwar and Mahfuz Anam, former chief election commissioner Abu Hena, former military officer Abdur Rashid, and lawyer Rokanuddin Mahmud.
The search committee members will also hold a meeting among themselves on Tuesday at 4:00pm.
