Bangladesh 2nd most gender equal country in Asia

Bangladesh is ranked second among the most gender equal countries in Asia this year in ‘Global Gender Gap Report 2018’ of the World Economic Forum.

The country is placed at 48th place, ahead of countries such as the United States (51st), Italy (70th) and Russia (75th).

In terms of political empowerment, the country has been ranked fifth in the world.

The report praises Bangladesh in terms of political empowerment for ‘recording progress on closing its political gender gap’ but it adds the country is experiencing ‘a widening gender gap in terms of labour force participation’.

Bangladesh is placed well ahead of other South Asian nation,s becoming first in the region.

Its South Asian neighbours are ranked as follows: Sri Lanka (100th), Nepal (105th), India is on the (108th) and Pakistan (148th).

Iceland tops the list, followed by Norway, Sweden, Finland, Nicaragua, Rwanda, New Zealand, the Philippines, Ireland and Namibia.
