7 sentenced to death for killing woman after rape in Joypurhat

A tribunal in Joypurhat on Tuesday convicted seven people and sentenced them to death for killing a woman after rape in Akkelpur upazila in 2016.

The condemned convicts are Sohel Talukdar, Afzal Hossain, Rahin, Ferdous Ali, Mujibur Rahman, Ruhul Amin and Azizar Rahman of Akkelpur upazila.

The tribunal fined Sohel and Ferdous Tk 500,000 each while the other convicts Tk 100,000 each.

According to the prosecution, the convicts picked up Aroti Rani, wife of Ujjal Mahant, a resident of a Deura shelter centre in the upazila, and violated her in turns taking her to a remote place on 8 October 2016.

Later, they fled the scene after leaving her in critical condition. She died on way to a local hospital.

On 10 October 2016, victim's husband filed a case with Akkelpur police station.

After examining the records and witnesses Joypurhat Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal judge ABM Mahmudul Haque handed down the verdict.
