Some 950 tourists who had been stranded in St Martin’s Island since Friday following cyclone Bulbul which lashed the country’s coastal districts on Sunday were rescued on Monday.

They were taken to Teknaf from the island by three ships in the afternoon, said Teknaf upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Saiful Islam.

He said the ships carrying the stranded tourists reached Teknaf around 5:30pm.

Upon their arrival, the UNO and others received them with flowers.

Around 1,200 tourists got stuck in the island following the cyclonic storm. Of them, 150 returned from the island at their own initiatives on Monday while the rest 100 remained there.
