A case was filed on Tuesday over the attack allegedly carried out by the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Muktijuddha Mancha on DUCSU vice president Nurul Haque and his associates.

The police filed the case as a claimant with the capital's Shahbagh police station, said Sazzadur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Ramna division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

“We’ve waited for the victims to file the case, but none of them appeared and therefore, the police have filed the case as the plaintiff,” Sazzadur said.

He said the suspects were identified analysing video footages and reports appearing in the media. Some eight names as well as anonymous people had been included as offenders.

“All the defendants are the activists of Muktijoddha Mancha,” he added.

The attacks were carried out on Dhaka University Central Students' Union VP Nurul Haque and around 30 of his associates who are the students of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University and several other colleges.

Witnesses said Nurul and his associates were beaten in two phases and were hit by iron, stick and bamboo.

BCL is the student wing of ruling Awami League while Muktijuddha Mancha is a platform of freedom fighters' descendants.

As many as 14 injured including Nurul Haque had to be hospitalised.

The condition of one of the victims, Tuhin Farabi, a private university student and also the joint convener of Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) was critical. He was kept under artificial ventilation. After slight improvement, he was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The CCTV footage records of the DUCSU building, the spot of the attacks, have been disappeared as the computer with the records reportedly went missing.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina instructed the authorities concerned to take action against the culprits, Obidul Quader, road transport and bridges minister, told the media on Monday.

The police on Monday detained two persons in connection with the attack.

Dhaka University administration has formed a six-member committee to inquire into the incident.
