A man on Sunday committed suicide after killing his wife, mother-in-law, and a neighbour and his daughter at Pallathal tea garden in Barlekha upazila, Moulvibazar, police said.

The murderer was identified as Nirmal while the victims are his wife Joly, mother-in-law Lakshmi, neighbour Basanta and his daughter Sheuli. All the four were labourers at tea gardens.

Confirming the incident to Prothom Alo, assistant sub-inspector of Barlekha police station Roksana Begum said police recovered the five bodies and sent those to morgue for autopsy.

Police and local people said at first Nirmal hacked his wife Joly indiscriminately, leaving her critically injured. When his mother-in-law and two neighbours came to rescue her, he hacked them as well. After ensuring death of the four, Nirmal committed suicide by hanging himself.

They said Nirmal killed them around 5:30am today over a family dispute.

ASI Roksana Begum said Nirmal was an addict.

An official of the Pallathal tea garden Nirmal was not from the area. He married Joly around a year ago. Since then, he has been staying with his in-law’s family in the area.

Superintendent of police Md Faruq Ahmed and Barlekha police station officer-in-charge Yasinul Haque visited the spot.
