MP Manjurul taken to Gaibandha

Manjurul Islam Liton, Awami League MP from Gaibandha-1 constituency, who was arrested on Wednesday on charge of shooting a minor boy, was taken to Gaibandha on Thursday morning, reports UNB.

Amid tight security, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police took him to police superintendent’s office in the district at around 6.00am, the news agency reports added.

Ashraful Islam, superintendent of police, Gaibandha, confirmed the arrival of the AL parliamentarian.

The arrest came hours after the Supreme Court (SC) stayed a High Court order that directed the ruling party MP to surrender before a lower court by 18 October in a case for shooting the minor boy.

The SC passed the order on Wednesday following a petition filed by the state on Tuesday seeking a stay on the HC order.

On Monday, the HC rejected the bail petition filed by Liton and asked him to surrender before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Gaibandha by 18 October.

Earlier on Sunday, the Gaibandha-1 constituency lawmaker filed the petition with the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

On 2 October, minor boy Sourav, 8, son of Sazu Miah of Gopalcharan village, suffered wounds to his both legs with bullets allegedly fired by Manjurul Islam Liton at the village in Sundarganj upazila.

Sazu filed an attempted murder case against Liton the following day.

Liton remained ‘on the run’ since the incident.

On 8 October, another case was filed against him on charge of vandalism and looting.
