Rail communication: Dhaka to remain cut off from midnight

Train operation between Dhaka and the rest of the country will be halted from Tuesday midnight in a bid to protect the capital city from the massive surge of Covid-19.

According to railway minister Nurul Islam Sujan, no train will leave or enter the capital city from 12:00am on Tuesday.

However, railway services between Chattogram to Sylhet, Mymensingh and Chandpur will remain operational as usual.

The railway minister told Prothom Alo that the government made this decision to curb the Covid-19 transmission in Dhaka.

There is no alternative but to desolate the capital as the western part of the country seeing the worst of coronavirus pandemic, the minister added.

Earlier, the government imposed restrictions on seven districts surrounding Dhaka in a bid to isolate Dhaka from the rest of the country.

These districts are Manikganj, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Gazipur, Madaripur, Rajbari and Gopalganj. The restrictions will continue up to 30 June.
