Mathieu Valbuena is getting the last laugh over his former tormentors after becoming integral to France's hopes.

The 5-foot, 6-inch (1.67metres) wideman established himself for his country after the epic two-leg playoff win over Ukraine in November.

France coach Didier Deschamps bypassed the more skilful Samir Nasri for his World Cup squad and Franck Ribery is out with a back injury, putting Valbuena in the spotlight after the more celebrated duo had ganged up on him upon his arrival at Marseille.

"He (Valbuena) has been superb for us (the national side) for the past two years," Deschamps said.

"He arrived with a big smile, a great eagerness to succeed and you can see that on the pitch, you can really feel it."
