Australia reached 165/8 at stumps, taking a 101-run lead after 40 overs.
Mitchell Starc destroyed Bangladesh’s batting with 6/12 in 10 overs, while Shoriful Islam produced an equally impressive response, taking 6/35. It was Shoriful’s first six-wicket haul in Tests.
Steven Smith made 42 and Cameron Green remained unbeaten on 51, with Nathan Lyon on 10*. Green and Lyon will resume on the second morning with Australia two wickets away from being bowled out.
