Swimmer Ariful finishes 78th in 100-metre breaststroke

Bangladeshi swimmer Ariful Islam finished 78th among 87 swimmers securing 598 points in the men's 100-meter breaststroke heats of the 18th FINA World Championship held at the Nambu International Aquatics Centre in Gwangju, South Korea on Sunday.

Ariful covered 100-meter distance with a timing of 01:07.74 minute, which must come as a disappointment when one considers his own personal record of 01:05.83 minute.

Another Bangladeshi swimmer Jewel Ahmed will start his campaign in the 100-metre backstroke on Monday (22 July) while promising Bangladeshi female swimmer Junaina Ahmed will start her campaign in the women's 200-metre butterfly on Wednesday (24 July).

Ariful will also participate in 50-metre freestyle on 26 July, Jewel will compete in 50-metre backstroke while Junaina in the 50-metre freestyle on 27 July.

Bangladesh swimming team is expected to return home on 29 July.
A five-member team including two male swimmers -- M Ariful Islam and Jewel Ahmed , lone female swimmer Junaina Ahmed -- and two officials are representing Bangladesh in the FINA World Championship.
