Jahangirnagar University (JU) has been shut down for an indefinite period following clashes allegedly between protesting students and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The syndicate of the university took the decision to shut the 8university in an urgent meeting on Tuesday.

The students have been asked to vacate their dormitories by 4:30pm today, said Rahima Kaniz, acting registrar of the university.

The clashes took place in front of the residence of the vice chancellor (VC) around 12:00pm. At least 30 teachers and students who were staging demonstrations demanding the resignation of vice-chancellor Farzana Islam were injured in an attack allegedly led by leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

The demonstrating students and teachers had confined VC Farzana Islam to her residence from Monday evening, demanding she resigns. A group of teachers, who are reportedly supporters of the VC, tried to disperse the demonstrators as well.

Around 200 BCL men swooped on the agitating students and teachers leaving more than 30 injured. Among them, 12 underwent treatment at the university medical centre while 20 others were taken to Enam Medical College Hospital.
