Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader's younger brother and Noakhali’s controversial Awami League (AL) leader Abdul Quader Mirza has resigned from the party (AL).
“I have resigned from the Awami League,” Mirza, also the mayor of Bashurhat pourashava under companiganj upazila, told Prothom Alo on Wednesday afternoon.
He said he has resigned from the party protesting against the administrative harassment inflicted by the ruling party on his followers and activists.
The mayor said he won’t involve in the party’s activities anymore. However, if his followers remain involved in the party’s activities, he will support them from behind.
Mirza announced his resignation from AL in a Facebook live on Wednesday at around 1:00pm.
He said, “I have resigned from the post of member of Companiganj upazila Awami League unit. I will neither participate in any election nor hold any post of AL in the future.”
“I will no longer stay at that party where no respect remains for me. From now, I will work for the Bangabhandhu Education and Research Parishad as a member.”
He alleged his brother Obaidul Quader, also general secretary of AL, has bowed down his head to evil forces.
