The finance minister on Thursday proposed construction of the country’s tallest building as part of a separate metropolis covering Purbachal and its adjoining areas near Dhaka city.

In his budget speech, AMA Muhith floated the idea of such a 'dream' project inclusive of the skyscraper to be implemented under public-private partnership (PPP).

“The project (Purbachal) will comprise construction of a 142-storeyed iconic tower with an international convention centre and a modern sports complex,” said the finance minister.

“The main auditorium of the convention centre will accommodate five thousand people while the main stadium of the sports complex will have a seating capacity of 50,000 spectators,” he added.

The minister said the project, once implemented, would facilitate trade and commerce while creating job opportunities for a cross section of the people.

“For this purpose, we need to purchase 70 acres of land and bring these areas under the national communication network,” Muhith said.

The minister also said he hoped the construction of the metropolis project in Purabachal would be completed by 2018.

“Necessary budget allocations will be made for this proposed project. Hopefully, it will be completed by 2018,” said the minister.

Currently, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, a more than 160-storey structure, is the world's tallest building. In Bangladesh, the tallest building is City Centre, which is a 37-storey structure.
