Tulip Siddiq, British MP and granddaughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, today called upon the Bangladeshi women to be confident for making their position more stronger in politics.
“There is a lack of confidence among women to come in politics. I have seen this situation in Britain also. Confidence is very important in politics,” she told newsmen emerging from a function at the city’s English medium Scholastica School at Uttara.
Former education secretary NI Khan, Scholastica School managing director Syeda Mahida Murshed and Tulip Siddiq’s husband Christian William St. John Percy were present on the occasion.
About her experience in the UK parliament election, Tulip said, “I prepared myself for the election for two years. I tried to attend social functions and gatherings in Britain. I kept my confidence high in all situations.”

“Many used to say that if she (I) wins, she wouldn’t do politics for Labour Party rather she would do politics for Awami League. It was a big challenge for me to make people understand. I told them that I came in politics for doing something for the people. I would work for those who support Labour Party in Britain. Those who reside in my constituency, I would work for them even if they do not support Labour Party,” she added.
She expressed her gratitude to the British Bangalees and all Bangladeshis for their unparallel support for winning in the polls.
Tulip said among the British Bangalees, most of them from Sylhet district, supported her in the polls. “At first I went to Sylhet to express my gratitude to the people of the district,” she said.
Admiring the women’s participation in politics, she said the Prime Minister, Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament in Bangladesh are women. “This never happened in Britain,” she added.
Tulip said women have been playing vital role in all sectors including readymade garments, factories and services in Bangladesh.
