An accused in a murder case was killed in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) called a gunfight with its members at Madhumita Railgate area in Tongi of Gazipur on Thursday night, reports news agency UNB.

The deceased was identified as Sufian, prime accused in a case filed over the killing of minor girl Chandni after rape.

Abdullah Al Mamun, commanding officer of RAB-1 Porabari camp, said the law enforcement members arrested one Niloy, friend of Sufian, from Madhumita Rail gate area on 17 May.

After a confessional statement of Niloy, the RAB members conducted a raid to arrest Sufian on Thursday night. When the RAB team went to the area, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back that triggered the gunfight, he added.

At one stage, Sufian was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while the others managed to flee the scene, RAB-1 commander said.

RAB members sent the body to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The law enforcement members claimed to have recovered a firearm and a bullet from the spot.

On 16 May, police recovered the body of Chandni from the Madhumita Railgate area in Tongi.
