AL factional clash: 14-yr-old killed, 10 injured in Lakshmipur

A 14-year-old boy was killed and at least 10 injured in a clash between two groups of ruling Awami-League (AL) over installing dredgers in the Meghna river in Raipur of Lakshmipur.

The clash erupted between the two groups -- Charbongshi union AL joint secretary BM Shahjalal Rahul and a union parishad (UP) member Nazrul Islam -- around 10:00am on Wednesday at Char Kachia village in Charbongshi union.   

The slain is Rasel Hossain, 14, son of a local resident Monir Bepari and the nephew of UP member Nazrul Islam who is also an AL activist. Rasel would work as farm labour in the field. The identities of the wounded ones could not be confirmed immediately.    

According to the police and the locals, Nazrul Islam extracted sands from a place in Meghna river, using his dredgers, though the place was occupied by those of Shahjalal Rahul. Centering the issue, an argument broke out between a farm worker of Nazrul and that of Rahul. Later, the both parties locked in clash where the followers of Rahul hacked Rasel dead on the spot.

Police detained six persons, including AL leader Rahul, in this incident.       

Charbongshi union chairman, Abu Saleh Md Mintu Farayazi, said the clash was erupted between the two groups of Rahul and Nazrul over establishing supremacy. A person named Rasel has been killed in the clash while several others were injured, who underwent treatment locally.     

Raipur police station officer-in-charge, Shipan Barua, said police rushed to the spot upon hearing the news. A youth has been killed. Legal actions will be taken against the persons responsible.
