Leaders of the opposition coalition have decided to form a liaison committee to avoid incoordination among the party parties.
The leaders of the ‘National Unity Process’ and Jukta Front took the decision at a meeting at Kamal Hossain’s chamber in the city on Monday.
After meeting, Kamal Hossain said the leaders came to a consensus to form a liaison committee.
Details of the meeting, he added, will be disclosed after tomorrow’s (Tuesday) meeting.
He also said the matter of the recently enacted law ‘Digital Security Bill, 2018’ was also discussed in the meeting.
He called on the government to withdraw the act.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rab was present among the other leaders.
But, Jukto (United) Front’s chairman and former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and convenor of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna missed the meeting.
Meanwhile, a controversy has been created following an interview of Kamal Hossain to the BBC.
“There is no objection in principal to join polls under this government,” Kamal Hossain told the British media on Monday.
Asked about the matter, Kamal Hossain said, “They understood wrongly. I didn’t say anything like that.”
ASM Rab then defended Kamal Hossain’s position on the matter.
The officials at the meeting said the alliance leaders discussed the matter at the beginning of the meeting.
They also said Kamal Hossain made phone call to Badruddoza Chowdhury during the meeting.
An official, seeking anonymity, told Prothom Alo that the leaders also tried to contact BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir over phone during the meeting, but he could not be reached.
The official added that after the meeting, Fakhrul phoned Gano Forum’s general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu.
On 22 September, leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Nagorik Oikya and other leaders joined the jurist Kamal Hossain-led National Unity Process and unveiled programmes to engage people in creating a wave of demands for free and fair elections in the country.
The alliance is scheduled to hold nationwide rallies from 1 October in this regard.
