Bangladesh ranks eighth in fish production

A pile of hilsha fishes. File photo: Prothom AloThe Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has recognised Bangladesh as the eighth top fish producing country in the world.

Based on 2017 data, the Economist Intelligence Unit's regular publication World in Figure has published this recently.

According to the publication, Bangladesh produces 4.1 million tonnes of fish while China tops the list with 62.2 million tonnes of fish. Indonesia, India, Vietnam, USA, Russia and Peru are next on the list.

According to government data, Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in fish production. The fisheries sector contributes 3.5 per cent to the national GDP of Bangladesh.
